Venezuela, Argentina Sign Accords For LNG Plant, Fuel Supply 2008-05-16 Venezuela and Argentina signed an agreement giving Argentine energy company Energia Estatal Argentina SA, or Enarsa, a 10% stake in a natural gas liquefaction and transportation company, as well as another fuel supply accord. The deals were signed late Thursday by Venezuela's Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez and Argentina's Planning Minister Julio de Vido, on the sidelines of a regional energy meeting, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, PdVSA, said in a statement Friday. The liquefaction plant would be set in the city of Guiria, state of Sucre. The new mixed company would also handle the construction and operation of a gas pipeline that would move the product from an offshore field into the plant, as well as market the LNG overseas. PdVSA would control 60% of the venture, with Enarsa holding 10%. The rest has yet to be assigned to unknown partners, according to the PdVSA statement. Separately, both countries signed an accord addendum where PdVSA agrees to supply Argentine energy companies with 10 million barrels of fuel oil and 2.96 million barrels of gasoil. The length of time the supply accord will cover was not available. Venezuela's and Argentina's governments have cemented closer economic ties during the past few years, particularly during the presidency of Nestor Kirchner. The country's new head of state, Cristina Fernandez, Kirchner's wife, is also cementing that relationship. |
