Shanghai Transit and Zero Emission Vehicle Technology Research

  1. Outline of Shanghai Transit

  There are 18,464 transit buses in Shanghai city including 529 trolley buses, 435 CNG buses and 454 high-grade buses with 949 transit lines and yearly 2.775 billion passenger capacity. There are 45,000 taxis including 38,000 LPG with yearly 894 million passenger capacity, 107 LPG and 3 CNG gas stations.

  2. Brief of Shanghai Bus Trolley Corp. Ltd

  Shanghai Bus Trolley Corp. Ltd. was set up on July 24, 2002 on the basis of 3 Trolley companies. The registered capital is RMB 220 million. The first big shareholder is Shanghai Bus Industrial (Group) Corp. Ltd. and the other 3 shareholders are Shanghai Transport Investment (Group) Ltd., Shanghai Yuanshui Corp. Ltd., and Shanghai VW Transport (Group) Corp. Ltd. The corporation contains 3 operation companies. By the end of Nov. 2002, there are 12,824 employees and 2,076 operation buses including 529 trolley buses and 1,547 buses. The total operation range is 627.654 km with 52 operation lines of which there are 17 trolley bus lines distributed all around the city and gone to each commercial shopping center, tourist destinations, railway stations, passenger landings and terminal ports, covering many remote villages. The average running range is daily 232.9 thousand km, average passengers daily 1015.1 thousand and operation income daily RMB 1368.5 thousand. It is currently the biggest public transport enterprise in Shanghai.

  3. Research on Shanghai trolley bus technology

  Under great support of Shanghai Municipal Science & Tech Commission and Transit Bureau, the project "Research and application of frequency converter driving trolley with capacitor" was established, and a research group for the project has been set up to initiate new research and application of sustainable transit trolleybus. According to the current reality of trolley bus development, the researchers adopt advanced science and technology, make new technique route for trolleybus and associate with those High-Tech enterprises to make great efforts on the program tackling. The project accomplished the key techniques development for the fore phases and conducted technique improvement on a trolley bus that is in action. We will make a conclusion of the experiences for FCB program to make out advanced vehicle technique conditions.

  The program in Shanghai has brought a series of related projects. Among the ongoing projects, there are the off-line technique for overhead charging at trolley bus stations and induction charging technique.

  4. Prospect of environment protection vehicle development

  Since March 1, 2003, the vehicles with new license plates in Shanghai must comply with Europe II emission standard. It is predicted that Shanghai will take Europe III emission standard into effect in 2005 and the emission standard will approach the International level before 2008.

  Shanghai Transit is making great efforts and will continue endeavoring to improve the environment. In the coming years, we expect to put 3,000 CNG buses into operation, build 9 CNG gas stations, increase LPG taxis to 7,000 and have more than 1,000 trolley buses. We'll try our best to bring about new concept of trolley lines as soon as possible.
