Introduction of Beijing Public Transportation Corp. 2003-01-13 1. Outline Beijing Public Transportation Corp. is a super-huge state-owned enterprise that mainly deals with ground public passenger transportation. By the end of 2002, there are 21049 business vehicles of various types in the corporation, including public buses and trolley buses 14518, mini-buses 464, tour buses 621, coaches 377, and taxies 5069; and 739 operating lines, including 502 lines of public trolley buses. In 2002, the total mileage is 1197 million kilometres. The total volume of passenger transportation is 4370 million passengers (in which public buses and trolley buses transportation is 4280 million passengers), that is, the average per day is 11.97 million passengers, which is about 70% of total volume of passenger transportation in Beijing. The revenue of the corporation in passenger transportation in 2002 is 3,300 million RMB, total industrial output value 810.44 million RMB and income of many kinds of business 881.1 million RMB. At present, there are 26 subordinate enterprises and institutions owned by the corporation. The number of staff registered is 84,544, total asset is more than 10 billion RMB, and net asset is about 6 billion RMB. 2. Existing Status of Clean Energy Vehicles Development In order to improve the atmospheric environmental quality in Beijing and reduce the pollution of vehicle emission, Beijing Public Transportation Corp. makes great efforts to develop Clean Energy Vehicles (CEVs) and gas-fueled vehicles. At present, out of 14,518 trolley buses and buses registered in corporation, there are 2003 buses with CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engines. Besides above vehicles, there are 600 vehicles fueled with dual-fuel of diesel and CNG, 2472 vehicles fuelled with LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas), 672 vehicles fuelled with diesel and LPG, and 640 trolley buses. Therefore, the total number of the gas-fueled vehicles and trolley buses, that is CEVs, is 6387, which is 44% out of all trolley buses and buses in corporation. To meet the demand of gas supply for gas-fuelled vehicles, the accessorial refueling stations have been built by the corporation with the great support from Beijing municipal government. By now, 24 CNG refueling stations had been set up, as well as 6 stations are in construction. Meanwhile 15 LPG refueling stations were set up so as to guarantee the properly daily operation of gas-fuelled vehicles. 3. Prospect of operation and vehicles development The regulations and standards of vehicle emission in Beijing become more and more strict. In 1998, Beijing took the lead throughout the country in enforcing the emission standard equivalent to Europe I for light vehicles, and in 2000, for heavy vehicles. In July 2002, the emission standard equivalent to Europe II was enforced for light vehicles, and it will be implemented for heavy vehicles in 2003. In 2005, it is planned to implement the emission standard equivalent to Europe III. Standards of vehicle emission will reach international level in 2007. In order to prepare for Olympic Games to be held in Beijing, the expected development scale of buses in the end of 2008 is as follows: The total number of public transportation business buses is 18,000, increasing 24% comparing with that of at present, which will consist of about 6,000 buses fuelled with natural gas, growing 200%, 800 trolley buses, growing 25%, about 1000 electric buses (including battary powered buses, hybrid buse and fuel cell buses) that are proposd and under feasibilty study, and the others vehicles fuelled with gasoline or diesel that meet the emission standard. Corresponding to the CNG buses development, 30 CNG fueling stations are planned to be built before 2008 Olympic Games. |
