General Motors Unveils the Most Technologically Advanced Fuel Cell Car

2006-10-29

Major car manufacturer General Motors unveiled what it claims is a road version of "the most technologically advanced automobile ever built" on 12 Sep., featuring an advance fuel cell propulsion system.

The Chevrolet Sequel, which was first introduced as a concept car in 2005, combines a hydrogen fuel cell system with lithium-ion batteries.

General Motors claims that the car features better drivability and performance than ever before, with a range of 300 miles without refueling and a 0 to 60 time of ten seconds.

Speaking about the Sequel, General Motors vice president Larry Burns said the introduction of new fuel cell technology was a huge step forward in modern, environmentally-minded car design, and was one that would get potential customers excited about fuel cell cars. "Sequel fundamentally changes the DNA of today's automobiles, exchanging an internal combustion engine, petroleum and mechanical systems for fuel cell propulsion, hydrogen and electrical systems," he said.

"It's a vehicle that is better in nearly every way – quicker, more sure-footed, easier to handle, easier to build and better looking."

The car will face competition in the fuel cell car market from the likes of Ford's fuel cell version of the Focus model, and Toyota's FCHV car.
